I’m super excited about today’s Slow Cooker meal!
Being a certified Indian Food Addict I am so happy to share one of my favorite Indian recipes!
Slow Cooker Indian Lentil Stew or Dal as it’s called at my favorite Indian restaurant is the perfect Indian comfort food meal.
Don’t be shocked people but this dish is VEGETARIAN!
Yes, one of my favorite dishes of all time in the history of my food eating is VEGETARIAN!
Hey, I never said all I eat is meat and butter.
You may have gotten the wrong impression of me based on all these glorious recipes on Creole Contessa, lol!
See people, no meat!
Don’t worry because what this dish lacks in meat it makes up for in FLAVA!
Did I mention how spicy my Dal is?
That’s what makes this so delicious, all the wonderful spices.
I think I used every spice in my cabinet…
We have black pepper, curry powder, turmeric, ginger, garlic and onion powder, paprika, chili powder, and creole seasoning of course!
I think I named them all…
The best part about this dish other than it’s da’bomb.com is how simple and quick this meal comes together.
All you have to do is soak the lentils for a few minutes in cold water, drain, rinse, and throw everything into the slow cooker!
Once you put all the ingredients into the slow cooker, cook for 5 hours on high!
After 5 hours remove the slow cooker lid and cook about 40-50 minutes more uncovered.
Lastly, cook a batch of hot rice, or quinoa…
Yes people I eat quinoa, lol!
And don’t forget some hot roti or naan bread.
I purchased my roti bread from my favorite Indian restaurant and I found naan in the grocery store.
Enjoy!

What kind of curry powder did you use? This looks delicious!
Hello Brittany it’s Madras Curry Powder here’s a link. http://www.amazon.com/Madras-Curry-Powder-SunBrand-113g/dp/B00155CZC0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1447534038&sr=8-1&keywords=madras+curry+powder
Thanks a bunch! Making it for tonight! 🙂
Enjoy Brittany! This is my favorite vegetarian dish.
Am I reading this right? Over six Tablespoons of spice? Or should that be teaspoons? It seems that would be extremely spicy. Just want to make sure before I try this. It sounds and looks delicious but I do not want to blow the top of my head off with spice either!!!
Hello Liz, yes that’s correct. And yes, it’s spicy. But I love spicy food. If you’re a newbie I suggest you start off with 1-2 teaspoons and then add more spice if you think it needs it. But I will admit, I add hot-sauce to this dish because I need it super hot! lol
I’ve been looking for a good crockpot cookbook!
Do you think this recipe would work with a Beef roast as well?
This is really good! I just made this and it smells and tastes amazing! I will definitely make this again.
I’m glad you enjoyed it Sarah!
So I am gonna try this nut I don’t have the liquid broth only the dry dice.. how many and how much water? Please in dl if possible ☺
I bought lentils for the first last night and put them in water to soak overnight is this too much or will it be ok?
It should be fine Cay!
This was my first time ever cooking lentils, and your recipe sounded so good I had to try it. I cut all the spice measurement’s in half and skipped the chili’s (I have an unfortunately low spice tolerance) and it came out perfectly! Thanks for this recipe, and inspiring me to try something new!
I’m glad you enjoyed it Rebecca.
I don’t have a crockpot, can this be made in a regular pot on the stove? I hope so, this looks great!
Yes Pola. I would say about 2 hours over medium heat and add extra broth if needed.
Sounds delish! I don’t have a crockpot and would like to throw it in the oven – about what temp and length of time would you suggest?
Hello Barb, I would say about 2-3 hours over medium heat. Add more broth if needed.
Do you think this would freeze and reheat well? It sounds so good!
Yes Kim. I freeze it all the time and it actually taste better after freezing.
i just made this! Great recipe. Thank you!
Oh this sounds really good. My husband absolutely LOVES creole food. Will be making this yummy mac and cheese this weekend. 🙂
This sounds soooooo yummy. I gotta try this! Thanx for sharing the recipe with us.
Thank you Rose
Hi! I am super excited to try making this dish! I read above that you like the dish quite spicy but I am hoping to tone down the heat to a mild- medium. How would you suggest altering the amount of spices? Also I am cooking for about 10 people and am wondering how much time you would add if I doubled the amount of lentils?
Thanks!
Hello Shirin, I would omit the Serrano chilies to reduce the spiciness. Also, it depends on the curry powder. They have mild and super spicy curry powder available. I would add about another hour on the cooking time. You want the lentils to be tender. You can check them after about an extra hour and see if they’re tender enough for your taste.
Any idea on calories per serving?
Hello Elizabeth, no I don’t have the caloric count but based on the ingredients it’s definitely low fat, low calorie.
Made these tonight. Used sharp cheddar and jalapeño/habenaro cheese and 1/2 cup chopped jalapeños. Didn’t have cheezit grooves, used off brand cheeseits. OMG these are awesome. Will definitely make them again. They were soooo good
